This beautiful hand made hat of our Orang Ulu really impressed me. There was once a TV program on religious arts etc, and they highlighted this particular design which showed ‘figures living in harmony etc’. Our local handicrafts are not only beautiful but also carry many designs that were inherited from ancestors who had designed these with a lot of meanings depicting culture and feelings of those olden days. Needless to say, I couldn’t resist buying one.
For the fashionable, I think you can start a new trend by wearing the hat which gives you good shade from the hot sun.

yb,
that is not an orang ulu hat. that hat is commonly found and made by the melanau race. a tradisional hat made by the orang ulu is known as ’sa’ong’.
by the way, i liked your blog and do keep it up.
LadyBird 09.24.08 @ 8:37 pmTQ Ladybird. I am extremely delighted to hear your feedback. Oh they were Melanau hats, were they? I am awfully sorry for the mistake. Pls do keep in touch.

Hi Ladybird, good morning!
Andy Chia 09.27.08 @ 7:09 pmI was at a handicraft centre yesterday where similar hats were sold. I was informedd that these were indeed Orang Ulu hats. The Melanau hats have different designs. I will post one Melanau hat photo to show you later.
TQ. Have a great weekend.
yes the hats are indeed beautiful. the mentioned orang ulu hat here (in the picture) is commonly known among the lun bawang community whereas the ’sa’ong’ which is also a type of orang ulu hat is commonly known among the kayan & kenyah community.
i’ll put the ’sa’ong’ pic and notify you one of this day ok.
